Firefighter Scholarship Program Criteria
GOAL: The current goal of the LVFA Scholarship Program is to award at least two scholarships during the 2024 calendar year. The anticipated minimum award for each scholarship is $500.00

Applicant Eligibility:

Meets current volunteer or paid status requirements with Larkspur Fire Protection District (LFPD).

Completion of Colorado Firefighter I certification.

Applicant Career Goals:
-
Shows a commitment to career plans in the fire service.

Conveys how this education program will further their career goals and also benefit LFPD.

Application Submission:
-
The submission package is composed of three documents: a completed application form, a Letter of Recommendation, and a 1-2 page essay / personal statement.

These three documents will be submitted by each Applicant to the LVFA Treasurer by the published submission deadline for that award cycle, at the following e-mail address: lvfatreas@gmail.com

Letter of Recommendation:

Provide one letter of recommendation as part of your submission:
-
Provided by a LFPD Captain or higher-level officer.

Details the applicant's suitability to receive the scholarship and applicability of the education in benefit to LFPD.

Essay or Personal Statement:
-
Explaining your firefighting/Emergency Medical Services (EMS) career goals, how this education will support reaching these goals, and how it will benefit LFPD.

Essay will be one to two pages, single space, 12-point font.

Financial Alternatives:
-
As applicable, Applicants should provide a description of other funding available to them, i.e., grants, scholarships, LFPD resources.

Personal financial resources will not be factors considered.

Amount Requested:
-
The scholarship request may include expenses of tuition, books, & course materials/fees.
-
THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE expenses related to travel, meals, accommodations or similar ancillary costs.

Interview:
-
The LVFA Scholarship panel may request an Applicant interview.
-
The panel will perform interviews which in general are uniform although relevant to the education program and Applicant.

Questions may include identifying prior patterns of academic goal fulfillment or clarification of application responses.

Contract:
-
Contract will contain specificity of a service commitment duration to LFPD following completion of scholarship-funded education.

Failure to complete the education program or terms of agreement may result in LVFA pursuing repayment of the scholarship.

Scholarship amounts and contract terms may vary due to vacillations in LVFA financial resources and the needs of LFPD.

Scholarship Applicant Recommendation:
-
After reviewing the Applicant’s submission package, the Scholarship Panel makes a recommendation to the LVFA officers regarding the Applicant(s) suitability for scholarship award and a recommended award amount.

The Scholarship Panel will construct and present to the LVFA Board of Officers a contract specific to the program and Applicant endorsing the scholarship award.

Final determination of scholarship awards and contract suitability will be made by the LVFA Board of Officers.

The contract will be signed by the scholarship recipient and two LVFA Officers.
-
Timing and the direct recipient of the scholarship payment will be contained in the contract.

Larkspur Volunteer Fire Auxiliary (LVFA) Scholarship
Application Form
The LVFA scholarship program is intended to facilitate the education of front-line emergency personnel, especially those early in their fire/EMS career development, serving the Larkspur Fire Protection District (LFPD). Scholarships will be awarded on an annual or semi-annual basis, as LVFA funding allows. Application periods and submission schedules will be published to the LFPD website at the start of each scholarship award cycle. Accepting an LVFA scholarship will require the applicant to sign a contract agreement to complete the education and a commitment of service to the LFPD. Failure to meet the agreement's terms may result in being required to repay the scholarship total amount.
